Bainum was 56. He most recentl y represented Manoa in onthe council. A statement read by Mallory Fujitani, a membef of Bainum's staff, said Bainum "wae feeling well at work yesterday" and that therr were no prior indications of a health She said he suffered chest pains Tuesdahy night and was taken to a hospitaemergency room, but could not be revived. A medicao doctor by training, Bainum was a Democrat who servedc in the state House of Representatives from 1990 to 1994representiny Waikiki. After serving in the House, Bainumk was a city council member from 1995to 2003. He was electedc to city council againin 2008.
He ran for mayodr in 2004, but narrowly lost to Mufi Bainum left Hawaii afterthe election, returning to his family's small-townb banking business and various other enterprises in Hannemann said he was shocked to learn of Bainum'es death. "I served with him on the City Counci l and we vied forthe mayor's seat in 2004. Throughoutt it all, I knew him as a man with a heartfelf desire tohelp others," Hannemann said in a Bainum is survived by his wife, and two sons, Z and A special election will be held to fill his seat withih 60 days. It will be the second special election for the councip inrecent months.
The council recentl held a special election following the deatnh of council member Barbara Marshall of Ikaika Anderson wonthat election.
