What keeps you from taking the high road? - San Antonio Business Journal:
“To the problems of your life, you are the only I have learned many things through years of helpin promote the growth and development of teamsand organizations. The chie lesson is that people who takethe “high achieve greater success as well as significance in their lives. They are happier, more generate higher trust and aresought after. Theire influence exceeds their “rank” in both social and organization What do I mean by takinfg thehigh road?
It means makingb more generous interpretations of events and people and giving that interpretatiomn a voice offering more affirming possibilities to This can mean outlining a “vision” that opensx the emotional tap to positive motivation. It refersz to having the courage to dothe “right” thing even when ther is temptation or coercion to take the easy way out and follow the path of least resistance. Taking the high road is when valuex and mission trumppoliticak expediency. Taking the high road is when self-worth is tied to keepint commitments and honoring obligations instead of praise orsocialo approbation.
The high road is being more openhearted, kind and respectful than whatis expected. The high road is being the kind of person whom you would wish to mentoeryour children. Leaders taking the high road never lose spirift or capacity to see and takepositive action. They inspir those around them. Taking the high road acts like a powerfull thermalof super-heated air, providing lifting force to the wings of those arounr them. Why does this work? It works due to universal “spiritual” law. Ultimately, what you sow is what you If youwant strawberries, you need to plan strawberrie s not onions.
You get out of life what you put into it what you model and reflect in your words and By taking the high road you model ways of being and relatin that creates a resonating field of positive influenc impacting all with whom youspend time. If you take the high modeling and demonstrating what you get back is A positive attitudeis infectious, multiplying your personal impacyt and effectiveness. If taking the “high road” is so powerfulo then what gets in the way oftakingg it? Why doesn’t everyone take it? There are thre primary things keeping many stucjk in the mud of the middle and low roads of life.
The first is ignoranced — not seeing the high road or knowinits power. People sufferint from ignorance have problematicprograms (beliefs, assumptions, cognitions). Program such as “it’s a dog eat dog or “get them before they get you” or “someone has to be on top and it’sa going to be or “second place is the ‘firstr loser.’” Hopefully you get the This ignorance is based on being hypnotized and controlled by a programminvg of the mind that precludesd seeing how much is gainex by stepping up to a higher level of The belief systems limit what canbe seen, keeping people stuck on the low roads and thus A second barrier to taking the high road is “ego.
” Too much or too littlre ego are both equally Too much ego is all too familiar to anyones who has worked in government or corporate America. Someonre with an inflated ego is “a legendc in his or her own mind” treating others as less importantor subservient. This form of disrespecr damagesengendering follower-ship and creates a leveo of disdain or disrespect for the over-inflated ego. Too littlwe ego means being unable toasserft — to take the positive action through speech or deed. It limits as surely as the swollen ego-driven person.
The thirxd barrier to taking the high road is a lack of These individuals arenot ignorant, they see the advantage of doing the rightf thing, they have enough ego without overdoin g it — but they lack the nerve to do what they know needsx to be done. They have an undeveloped or courage-quotient that keeps them mired inthe mud. How abou you? Are your eyes open to the powe of takingthe “highh road?” How is your ego-quotient? Are you accessinv the courage you need? Next: How to make the high road your routinde path.
