Kansas City Council postpones smoking ban vote - Kansas City Business Journal:

The council voted unanimously to postponew a vote onthe ordinance, whicj Councilman Chuck Eddy introduced at the Nov. 16 The finance and audit committese heard public comment on the revised ordinance Wednesday and recommendexd that the City Council debate and pass the ordinancde at its meetingon Thursday. The committees now will meet Dec. 13 to further discuss the issure and hear morepublic debate. Many bar and restauranr owners took issue with an exemption in the ban for the gamblinh floors at two KansasCity casinos.
With the reviseds ban, those casinos wouldn't be required to ban smokintg on their gaming floors until casinose in Riverside and North Kansas City also are require todo so. Althoughj Kansas City already has passed a smokinv ban for barsand restaurants, that ban doesn't take effectf until 85 percent of the metr area's population passes a similar ban. The revisedd ban would prohibit smoking in all bars and restaurants beginninbg inJanuary 2008, which coincides with a recengt smoking ban passed in Overland Park.
